SR20 On Steroids

Building a hardcore performance vehicle capable of delivering on a broad scale requires bulletproofing practically every aspect of the car. Hawkins began in the engine bay. Aiming for over 400 horsepower on pump gas and 500 horsepower on race fuel, Hawkins had to have the engine built strong. The ever-popular SR20DET engine was pulled from its home to be rebuilt by Millennium Motorsports. The block was stripped and the cylinders prepared for new slugs. Forged-aluminum CP Pistons in an 8.5:1 compression ratio link to the factory crankshaft by way of SCAT forged connecting rods secured by ARP rod bolts. ACL Race Series rod and main bearings keep the rotating assembly spinning smoothly throughout the RPM range.

The stock S14 variable cam cylinder head, also known as a "low port" head, was swapped out in favor of a non-variable cam head from an S13 variant of the SR20DET engine. Between the variants of SR20DET engines, the S13 "high port" cylinder head is shown to flow more efficiently then the S14 head. The S13 cylinder head received a port-and-polish service to improve the airflow efficiency of the head. A 3-angle valve job, K-Line valve guides, HKS solid lifters and TOMEI POWERED rocker-arm stoppers supplement the Ferrea dual valve springs and titanium retainers that keep the valvetrain performing smoothly. The combustion chambers have been CC'd as well, ensuring uniformity across all four cylinders. Larger ARP ½-inch head studs cinch the longblock assembly together while GReddy's 1.2mm head gasket ensures a good seal.

Better Than Blood Doping

With the block complete, attention shifted to making horsepower. A GReddy tubular exhaust manifold harnesses the heat energy released by the burnt fuel and channels it into the turbine of the GReddy TD06SH-25G turbocharger. The rapidly expanding gases spin the turbine wheel before exiting to the atmosphere by way of a custom 3-inch turbo-back exhaust system. The 25G compressor forces the intake aircharge through custom intercooler piping to the GCG bar-and-plate intercooler for heat exchange. The cooler, denser air leaves the intercooler and flows through an 80mm billet aluminum throttle body from Throttle Bodies Australia. The throttle body leads the air charge into the custom Millennium Motorsports intake manifold en route to the combustion chambers.

Triple Pumps And Injection For Power

The air is saturated with Australia's 98-octane pump gas by four RC Engineering 750cc/min fuel injectors. The hungry injectors are kept supplied by a phalanx of fuel pumps, including a Walbro 255 lph in tank pump and dual Bosch 044 in-line pumps. A SARD fuel pressure regulator maintains the fuel pressure needs of the injection system. Haltech's E11v2 engine management system meters the fuel and controls the spark timing to the Haltech coil packs. With boost pressure held steady at 23 psi by a GReddy Type-R external wastegate and a Blitz Dual SBC electronic boost controller, the S14 generated 440 horsepower and 307 lb-ft of torque on the Dyno Dynamics dynamometer.

Don't Sweat The Details

The heat generated by the heavily fortified SR20 mill had to be kept in check. Unfortunately, the factory heat exchangers proved to be inadequate. To solve the temperature issues, the engine coolant now releases waste heat by way of a triple-core PWR aluminum racing radiator and PWR 17-inch Thermo Fan. A PWR oil cooler supplements the traditional cooling system along with a PWR power steering fluid cooler.

Track Shoes

Getting all 440 horsepower to the ground was next on the task list. To channel power from the crankshaft through the upgraded Skyline R33 GT-S transmission, an NPC custom twin-plate clutch was selected to replace the factory piece. A custom driveshaft turns the 4.11 final drive while a Nismo Pro Type-TT 1.5-way limited-slip differential splits the power to the Nismo half-shafts. The factory rollers were scrapped in favor of 18-inch Volk Racing GT-C wheels in a 9-inch width up front and 11-inch width in the rear. 235/40 and 265/35 Toyo Proxes T1-R tires were stretched onto the front and rear rims, respectively. Taking advantage of the increased contact patch, the factory brake rotors and pads were scrapped and replaced with a set of Disc Brakes Australia 4000-series brake rotors and Nismo R-Tuned brake pads. Goodridge steel-braided lines filled with Motul PBF600 brake fluid sharpen the brake system's response to pedal input.
